Program Overview

Introduction to the Radiographic Investigation in Forensic Science Program

The Radiographic Investigation in Forensic Science program is designed to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the principles and practical applications of radiographic imaging techniques used in forensic science. This program is of interest to individuals from various backgrounds, including archaeologists, physical anthropologists, radiographers, scenes of crime officers, forensic investigators, ballistics specialists, engineers, and others involved in forensic investigation.

Program Overview

  • The program aims to equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to evaluate the fundamental principles of a wide range of imaging techniques.
  • Participants will learn to identify and assess appropriate radiation protection measures when employing radiographic imaging techniques according to current ionising radiation regulations.
  • The program will cover the critical assessment of the advantages and disadvantages of different imaging techniques and their use in the individualisation of human remains and characterisation of trauma and/or disease states.
  • Practical implementation of appropriate imaging techniques for defined situations and interpretation of the results will also be covered.

Core Content

The program will be taught at MSc standard and will introduce students to a range of topics, including:

  • Physics of X-ray production and utilisation
  • Radiographic equipment and complimentary imaging modalities computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and ultrasound
  • Analogue and digital image recording media
  • Radiation protection and legislation
  • Medical imaging techniques and their application in the forensic examination of human subjects; ballistic trauma, narcotics trafficking, abuse, assault, homicide, unexplained sudden death, human identification
  • Virtopsy ® and the virtual post-mortem
  • Radiographic techniques applied to art work and counterfeit objects
  • Industrial radiographic techniques for engineering components including weapons, missiles, and improvised explosive devices

Program Structure

  • The program is offered as a short course, lasting 5 days.
  • It is part of the Forensic programme at Cranfield University.
  • Upon successful completion of the accredited short course, participants will gain 10 Cranfield learning credits.

Credits Towards Further Study

  • The short course forms part of the Forensic programme and can contribute to further study.
  • However, please note that Cranfield University will not be taking registrations for certain courses (MSc, PgDip, and PgCert) from the next academic year onwards, which affects credit transfer to Cranfield degree awards.

Target Audience

The program is designed for:

  • Archaeologists
  • Physical Anthropologists
  • Scene of Crime Officers
  • Radiographers
  • Radiologists
  • Forensic Engineers
  • Ballistics Analysts
  • Pathology Technologists

Speakers and Guest Lecturers

The program features presentations, case studies, demonstrations, and practical activities led by:

  • Dr Mark Viner
  • Professor Keith Rogers
  • Professor Andrew Shortland
  • National and international guest speakers from the fields of medicine, dentistry, law enforcement, and industry will also share their experiences.

Location and Accommodation

  • The program is held at the Cranfield campus.
  • The course is non-residential, but participants can book accommodation on campus or at nearby hotels.
  • Cranfield campus is situated close to Milton Keynes and Bedford, with easy access to major airports, coach and train stations, and the M1 motorway.

Fees

  • The cost of the short course is Ł2,250, and the accredited short course is Ł2,500.
