Overview
This course aims to provide knowledge of the methods for safety assessment in relation to the design, reliability, safety, and certification of aircraft systems. It describes and explains the various approaches to assessing the safety of increasingly complex aircraft systems whilst providing an open forum in which all issues related to safety assessment can be discussed.

Course Structure
The course is delivered over five days, mostly in the form of lectures and tutorials. Group work also takes place throughout the week, where delegates will carry out a safety assessment in teams. Industry speakers are scheduled, representing companies such as GE Aerospace, Aero Engine Controls Ltd, and Raytheon Systems Ltd. All delegates will receive a Certificate of Attendance at the end of the course.

- Demonstrate an understanding of the regulatory background behind the Safety Assessment of Aircraft Systems
- Choose and apply the technique(s) which is most appropriate for the system under consideration
- Understand the theory behind each technique, including the strengths and weaknesses of each one, and be aware of possible pitfalls
- Appreciate the role of safety assessment in the overall context of aircraft certification
- Understand the issues to be faced for the certification of new systems and aircraft

- Fault Tree Analysis, Dependence Diagrams, and Boolean Algebra
- Zonal Safety Analysis (ZSA), Particular Risk Analysis (PRA), and Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) of Aircraft Systems
- Safety and Certification of Digital Systems and Safety Critical Software
- Application of Aerospace Recommended Practice ARP4761 and ARP 4754
- Certification Maintenance Requirements
- Flight-deck Ergonomics

The course is designed for personnel from all parts of the aviation industry, although it will be of particular value to those working for manufacturers, suppliers, operators, and aviation authorities who are concerned with the design, reliability, safety, or certification of aircraft systems.
Accreditation
This short course is a module within the MSc in Airworthiness, which is accredited by the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) and Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE).

Cranfield University is situated in Bedfordshire, close to the border with Buckinghamshire, and is conveniently located between junctions 13 and 14 of the M1. London Luton, Stansted, and Heathrow airports are 30, 90, and 90 minutes respectively by car.
