Doctorate Program in Social and Legal Sciences

The Doctorate Program in Social and Legal Sciences is designed to provide doctoral training that contributes to promoting the training of people with competence in research and innovation in Social and Legal Sciences. The program aims to advance, through research, in response to the needs of society within the framework of an integrating program.

Objectives

The general objectives of the Doctoral Program are to:

• Encourage and deepen knowledge and professional, scientific, and technical development of doctoral students in the field in question.
• Train new researchers capable of joining research teams.
• Promote the teaching career, deepening the research training of future teachers.
• Specialize postgraduates who are interested in their adequate professional, scientific, and technical development.
• Promote the creation of research groups and networks, nationally and internationally, and interdisciplinarity.

Competences

The program aims to equip students with the following competences:

• Systematic understanding of a field of study and mastery of research skills and methods related to that field.
• Ability to conceive, design, or create, put into practice, and adopt a substantial research or creation process.
• Ability to contribute to expanding the frontiers of knowledge through original research.
• Ability to carry out a critical analysis and evaluation and synthesis of new and complex ideas.
• Ability to communicate with the academic and scientific community and with society in general about their fields of knowledge in the modes and languages commonly used in their international scientific community.
• Ability to promote, in academic and professional contexts, scientific, technological, social, artistic, or cultural progress within a knowledge-based society.

Personal Abilities and Skills

The program also aims to develop the following personal abilities and skills:

• Get along in contexts in which there is little specific information.
• Find the key questions that must be answered to solve a complex problem.
• Design, create, develop, and undertake new and innovative projects in their field of knowledge.
• Work both as a team and autonomously in an international or multidisciplinary context.
• Integrate knowledge, deal with complexity, and make judgments with limited information.
• The criticism and intellectual defense of solutions.

Additionally, the program aims to equip students with the ability to:

• Identify open problems, not yet resolved, in the area of Social and Legal Sciences.
• Acquire advanced scientific knowledge in the field of Social and Legal Sciences, which will allow them to generate new ideas within a line of research.
• Understand the procedure, value, and limits of the scientific method in the field of Social and Legal Sciences.
• Assess the importance of documentary sources, manage them, and search for information for the development of any research work.
• Acquire the ability to read and understand publications within their field of study/research; as well as its cataloging and scientific value.
• Prepare a scientific article of impact in the area of Social and Legal Sciences.
• Prepare, present, and defend a doctoral thesis in the area of Social and Legal Sciences.

Access and Admission

The acceptance or denial of admission will be carried out by the Academic Commission, taking into account the following criteria:

• The curricular profile of your previous studies (prioritizing according to the degree of affinity to the different specialties included in the program)
• The academic record and level of recognition of the institution of origin
• Relevant and accredited professional and research experience within the lines of research included in the doctoral program
• Any activity, merit, or documented recognition that the student contributes and that serves to assess said professional and research experience

Number of New Admission Places

The program offers 120 new admission places.

Instructions and Recommendations for the Format of Doctoral Thesis Reports

The program provides instructions and recommendations for the format of doctoral thesis reports, including instructions for thesis by compendium of articles.

Quality Guarantee

The program has an ANECA verification report and a verified memory. The program also has a link to the RUCT and a link to the BOCM.

Internal Quality Assurance System

The program has a manual of the internal quality assurance system and a composition of the commission. The program also has a code of good practices and a results report.

Results Report

The program provides a results report, which includes quantitative information on the results obtained in the follow-up of the degree, differentiated by academic year.

General Information Collection Plan

The program has a general information collection plan, which includes surveys addressed to new students of doctoral programs, doctoral student satisfaction surveys, and assessment surveys of supervisors and thesis tutors.

Improvement Actions

The program has improvement actions, which include actions taken in response to the results of the surveys and other evaluations.

Renewal of Accreditation

The program has a renewal of accreditation, which represents the culmination of the implementation process of the official qualifications registered in the Register of Universities, Centers, and Qualifications (RUCT).

Tracking

The program has a tracking system, which includes regular follow-up final reports.

Collaboration Agreements

The program has collaboration agreements with various institutions, including the State Agency Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC), Banco Santander SA, and the Camilo José Cela University.
