University Extension Course for Legal Assistants for People with Intellectual and/or Developmental Disabilities
Presentation
The University Extension Course for Legal Assistants for people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities aims to provide students with knowledge in different legal matters, enabling them to access more important jobs in society. The course will train students to teach others about the rights of people with intellectual disabilities and to work as legal assistants in companies related to the administration of justice.
Objectives
The objectives of the course are:
- Promote the social and labor autonomy of the student.
- Empower people with intellectual disabilities by teaching specific knowledge that allows them to broaden their work horizons.
- Train people with intellectual disabilities in the knowledge of their rights and how they are part of their lives.
- Create quality jobs as legal trainers in different fields such as education and business, and as legal assistants in companies.
- Impact on society and public opinion to overcome the limits and barriers that exist on intellectual disability.
- Promote diversity within the university environment, and collaboration between degree students and those pursuing higher studies at the URJC.
Competences
General Competencies
- The student will be able to act as a trainer-disseminator on the rights of people with ID in different environments.
- The student will be able to carry out auxiliary tasks as a legal consultant.
- The student will be able to carry out administrative functions linked to the administration of justice.
Specific Competences
- General knowledge of law as an instrument for regulating social relations.
- Knowledge of the fundamental rights recognized in the Constitution and its defense instruments.
- Knowledge of the basic principles of civil law, labor law, and tax law.
- Students will be able to search legal databases and identify legal problems related to people with intellectual disabilities.
Programme
The course is structured into modules, with each module having several subjects. The modules are:
- Module A: Introduction to university life, introduction to law, fundamental rights, databases, and more.
- Module B: Civil law, labor law, databases II, and more.
- Module C: Tax law, corporate law, databases III, and more.
- Module D: Paralegal, administrative law, databases IV, and more.
- Module E: Paralegal, legal IA, legal English, and more.
- Module F: Paralegal, legal AI, legal English, and more.
Recipients
The course is aimed at young people with intellectual disabilities between 18 and 30 years of age who have communication, oral and written skills, and a sufficient level of independence to move around in a university environment.
Access Requirements
- Candidates must fill out the pre-registration form during the specified period.
- A face-to-face test will be conducted for selected candidates.
- The selection criteria include the assessment of the motivational letter and personal interview.
