Introduction to the Dentistry Program

The Dentistry program at the Rey Juan Carlos University is designed to train professionals with adequate knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competences to serve society by satisfying its health demands, both in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, ethically, efficiently, and safely.

Program Overview

• The program is offered at the Alcorc Campus.
• It is a five-year program, with 300 credits.
• The program is face-to-face, with a progressive implementation starting from the first year.
• The coordinator of the program is Prof. Dr. Ms. Mｪ Victoria Fuentes Fuentes.

Objectives

The fundamental objective of the Curriculum in Dentistry is to train a professional who is capable of:

• Carrying out a general dental practice independently and without any type of supervision.
• Recognizing their limitations and seeking advice or referring the patient to another professional when necessary.
• Maintaining an effective and adequate interaction with patients, colleagues, and other health professionals.
• Practicing in the best interest of patients at all times and in accordance with current health legislation.
• Promoting lifelong learning in an effective way to allow adequate professional development.

Competences

The program aims to develop the following competences:

Professional Values, Attitudes, and Ethical Behaviors

1. Know the essential elements of the dental profession, including ethical principles and legal responsibilities.
2. Understand the importance of such principles for the benefit of the patient, society, and the profession.
3. Know how to identify the patient's concerns and expectations and communicate effectively with patients, family members, the media, and other professionals.
4. Understand and recognize the social and psychological aspects relevant to the treatment of patients.
5. Know how to apply the principles of anxiety and stress control on oneself, patients, and other members of the dental team.

Scientific Foundations of Dentistry

6. Understand the basic biomedical sciences on which Dentistry is based.
7. Understand and recognize the normal structure and function of the stomatognathic apparatus.
8. Learn about the general processes of the disease, including infection, inflammation, alterations of the immune system, degeneration, neoplasia, metabolic alterations, and genetic disorders.

Clinical Skills

9. Obtain and prepare a clinical history containing all relevant information.
10. Know how to carry out a complete oral examination, including appropriate complementary radiographic and exploration tests.
11. Have the ability to make an initial diagnostic judgment and establish a reasoned diagnostic strategy.
12. Establish the diagnosis, prognosis, and adequate therapeutic planning in all clinical areas of Dentistry.

Minimum Stay Requirements

• The maximum duration for full-time students is eight years.
• Part-time students may request an extension of up to two more years.
• Students must pass a minimum of two subjects in the first year.

Access and Registration

• Access to the program requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent and passing a test.
• The enrollment process is done through the internet.
• The number of places offered for new admission is 75, including transfer admission places.

The program has various material resources, including the University Clinic, where clinical practices are carried out.
