Course Overview

The Gateway to Medicine course is a six-year program designed to support Wales-domiciled students who have the talent, drive, and potential to become doctors but have faced challenges that prevented direct entry into the five-year Medicine degree. This pathway provides an opportunity for students to study medicine and become doctors in Wales.

Course Structure

The course starts with a dedicated Gateway Year, which strengthens science knowledge and academic skills to A-level standard and prepares students for medical study. The Gateway Year includes modules such as:

• Introduction to Academic Skills
• Introduction to Laboratory Skills
• Numeracy for Medical Sciences
• History of Medicine
• Introduction to Chemistry and Biology for Medicine and Pharmacy
• Human Systems and Biological Chemistry for Medicine and Pharmacy

Upon successful completion of the Gateway Year, students progress to the five-year BMBS Medicine degree. The BMBS degree includes a range of modules, such as:

• Medicine Year 1
• Medicine Year 2
• Medicine Year 3 (Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship)
• Medicine Year 4
• Medicine Year 5

Teaching and Assessment

The course is taught through a combination of lectures, tutorials, self-study, e-learning, and training in professional skills. Assessment methods include lectures, tutorials, e-learning, training in professional skills, self-study, and student-selected components.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for the Gateway to Medicine program, applicants must:

• Be Wales-domiciled
• Meet widening participation criteria
• Have English Language or Welsh Language at grade B/6 and double Science at grades BB/66 (or grades B/6 in both Biology and Chemistry) and Maths grade B/6
• Have four other GCSEs at grades B/6
• Achieve A-level grades BBB (or equivalent), including two sciences from the list: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Economics, or Maths/Further Maths/Statistics
• Pass the science practical element of the A-level if this is part of the program of study
• Demonstrate an awareness of the healthcare system in the UK and the nature of medical training in their personal statement
• Sit the UCAT in the year of application
• Attend an interview if invited

Upon successful completion of the Gateway Year and the five-year BMBS Medicine degree, graduates can pursue a range of career options, including:

Fees and Costs

The tuition fees for the Gateway to Medicine program are:

• Foundation Year Fee: ｣9,790
• Full-time Fee: ｣9,790 (for years 2-6)
• International Fee: ｣21,000 (for years 2-6)

Welsh Provision

There are opportunities to study through the medium of Welsh, and students can develop their Welsh-language skills throughout the course. Scholarships and bursaries are available for students who study through the medium of Welsh.

Additional Information

The course is professionally accredited by the General Medical Council, and graduates are eligible to enter the two-year NHS Foundation Training Programme. The University offers a range of support services, including careers and employability support, financial support, and student support.
