Course Overview
This part-time, level 6 short course is designed to provide learners with the theory and practice to provide effective contraceptive and sexual health services to patients.
About This Course
- This course is delivered on the Bangor and Wrexham campuses, with some content accessed online (blended learning method).
- The course prepares students to respond to the individual needs of patients in relation to reproductive health and/or sexual/emotional health in a non-judgmental, non-sexist, non-racist, and non-homophobic way.
- The aims of this course include increasing knowledge and understanding of different methods of contraception, providing learners with the theory and practice to prepare them to provide contraceptive and sexual health services, and taking a wider view of the health of the population by including aspects of health promotion.

Course Content
The course content includes but is not limited to:
- Professionalism, communication, and confidentiality, informed choice
- Anatomy and Physiology (Male and Female reproductive systems, physiology of menstrual cycle)
- Methods of contraception (Hormonal and Non-Hormonal, natural)
- Sexual Health education and health promotion
- Psychosexual counseling
- History taking and risk assessment (pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases)
- Legal and Ethical implications
- Screening and vaccination programs in SRH
- Trauma-informed care
- Multidisciplinary team working and referral
- Working with young people and vulnerable groups
- Equality and diversity in relation to sexual health consultations
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, learners will be able to:
- Critically analyze the roles and responsibilities of practitioners in a multidisciplinary team that provides contraceptive and sexual health services.
- Critically evaluate the principles and techniques of contraception and demonstrate the clinical skills required to meet clients' needs.
- Critically evaluate the theory supporting the provision of contraception and associated health services.
- Critically evaluate the complex ethical and legal issues that may arise in the provision of contraceptive and sexual health services.
Course Structure
- 4 consecutive days of face-to-face interactive lectures, in the classroom or online.
- 1 day of self-directed study.
- 7 hours of flexible but compulsory engagement in an online discussion board throughout the module.
- Attendance at 12 x 3-hour clinics (close to the geographical area of normal practice).
- Learners will be required to undertake further reading and assignment preparation.
Assessments
Assessments on this course include:
- Essay (2,000 words).
- Reflective journal.
- Completing a clinical competency workbook.
Entry Requirements
Applicants must fulfill the following criteria to be considered eligible for this course:
- NMC registered nurse, midwife, or Specialist Community Public Health Nurses (SCPH).
