The University of California, Merced offers various programs for students, including Living Learning Communities (LLCs). One such LLC is the Carson House, which focuses on sustainability and the environment.

Carson House Living Learning Community

The Carson House LLC is available to first-year students interested in sustainability and the environment, and is open to all majors. It is located in Glacier Point, 4th Floor.

Program Description

Students in the Carson House LLC will enroll in a mandatory 2-unit course affiliated with the LLC in the Fall and Spring semesters. The course focuses on understanding sustainability through scientific research and its application in environmental management, engineering, communications, policy, health, and effecting personal and societal change. In addition to taking these courses, students in Carson House will engage in communal learning and career development experiences such as movie nights, hands-on workshops, and field trips.

Requirements and Activities

Members of the LLC are required to attend professional development events outside of class, including workshops, talks, and panels. The Carson House LLC is affiliated with the Faculty Advisory Committee on Sustainability (FACS), whose members provide support and mentorship for first-year students to learn more about innovative environmental research and initiatives.
