Overview

The Media Studies: Key Thinkers and Approaches short course introduces students to key figures, theories, and approaches within media and cultural studies. This course provides a critical and intellectual foundation for further study in the field. Each week presents an important debate, scholarly perspective, or school of thought within the discipline, including medium theory, notions of the public sphere, and questions of digital media. A particular focus is placed on primary texts written by influential figures within the history of media studies.

Course Details

• The course is a short course that can be taken as a standalone or as part of other programs.
• It is worth 30 credits at level 4.
• Assessment is via a 1200-word academic writing exercise (40%) and three essay questions, totaling 3000 words (60%).
• Students on this course study alongside Birkbeck students enrolled on undergraduate or postgraduate courses, providing opportunities for networking.

Entry Requirements

• Most short courses have no formal entry requirements and are open to all students.
• This short course has no prerequisites.
• As part of the enrolment process, students may be required to submit a copy of a suitable form of ID.
• International students who wish to come to the UK to study a short course can apply for a Visitor visa. Note that it is not possible to obtain a Student visa to study a short course.

Tuition Fees

• The tuition fee for the course is £1600.
• Students are charged a tuition fee for each module at enrolment. Module fees for students continuing on their programme in following years may be subject to annual inflationary increases.
