Introduction to the Accounting and Finance Program

The BSc Accounting and Finance program at Birkbeck offers students the opportunity to acquire both quantitative and analytical skills required for a career in accountancy, alongside a range of transferable skills. What You Will Learn

On this course, students will learn to critically evaluate the use and suitability of accounting and finance techniques in different contexts. They will also learn how to work out processes of calculation, reporting, and evaluation, and gain a critical understanding of the factors that influence the financial decision-making process.

How You Will Learn

Teaching includes lectures, seminars, and workshops. Students will take tutorials and seminars alongside a diverse range of students, many of whom will have come directly from careers as administrators, clerical workers, or managers, to develop more detailed and nuanced insights into accounting and finance.

Foundation Year

If students opt for the Foundation Year route, this will fully prepare them for undergraduate study. It is ideal for those returning to study after a gap, or who have not previously studied the relevant subjects, or did not achieve the grades needed for a place on their chosen undergraduate degree.

Entry Requirements

We welcome applicants without traditional entry qualifications, basing decisions on our own assessment of qualifications, knowledge, and previous work experience. For part-time courses, standard requirements are a minimum of two A-levels or equivalent.

GCSEs

Applicants will normally be expected to have grade C or grade 4 in GCSE-level English and mathematics.

English Language Requirements

If English is not the first language, our usual requirement is the equivalent of an International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic Test) score of 6.5, with not less than 6.0 in each of the sub-tests.

Teaching

At Birkbeck, most courses are taught in the evening, and all teaching is designed to support students who are juggling evening study with work and other commitments.

Methods of Teaching

Pre-recorded lectures and seminars. The Foundation Year is composed mainly of interactive, tutorial-style classes that support the development of knowledge, skills, and confidence.

Teaching Hours

Our evening hours are normally between 6 pm and 9 pm. Some programs also offer teaching during the day.

Assessment

Assessment is an integral part of university studies and usually consists of a combination of coursework and examinations.

Methods of Assessment

Most modules are assessed by an unseen formal examination and coursework; examinations are normally taken at the end of each term. In the final year of studies, students will independently design and complete a large written assignment, in the form of a research project/dissertation.
