Master Program in Sciences for Mechanics of Materials and Structures (SMMS)
Overview
The Master program in Sciences for Mechanics of Materials and Structures (SMMS) is a co-accredited program between several institutions, including the University of Toulouse, INSA, IMT Albi Carmaux, INP ENI Tarbes, and ISAE Supaero. The program is designed to provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills to develop high-level research in the field of mechanical engineering.
Program Details
- Type of Diploma: Master
- Mention: Génie mécanique
- Level of Admission: Bac + 3
- Level of Graduation: Bac + 5 (Niveau 7)
- Language of Instruction: French
- Internship: Yes, obligatory
- Duration of the Program: 2 years
Presentation of the Formation
The Master program in Génie mécanique (GM) consists of four tracks:
- Calcul en Aéronautique (CaAero)
- Conception en Aéronautique (CoAero)
- Productique en Aéronautique (ProdAero)
- Sciences pour la Mécanique des Matériaux et des Structures (SMMS)
The first semester of the master's program is common to all tracks and provides a foundation in the different professions of production, design, and calculation of structures. This allows for true multidisciplinarity within the professions of mechanical engineering and can facilitate later reorientation.
Knowledge
The program covers various areas, including:
- Structures Composites:
- Rheological behavior of materials
- Damage to stratified composite structures
- Machining and processes
- Mechanics of Fracture, Plasticity, Advanced Calculation Methods
- Dynamics of Structures:
- Non-linear vibrations
- Aeroelasticity
- Rapid dynamics
- Measurements in Mechanics:
- Photomechanics
- Thermography
- Optional Teachings According to the Student's Personal Project (Non-Exhaustive List):
- Optimal design of mechanical systems
- Dynamics of machining
- Process optimization
- Thermomechanics of materials
Partnerships
The program involves partnerships with several laboratories, including:
- Institut Clément Ader (ICA)
- Institut de Mécanique des Fluides de Toulouse (IMFT)
- Cemes
- CIRIMAT
Different teacher-researchers from these laboratories participate in the training.
Admission
Prerequisites
- Level of Recruitment: Bac + 3
- Required Formation: Students admitted to the Master 2 SMMS must have at least a Bac + 4 degree from an engineering school or a first-year master's degree in mechanics or mechanical engineering.
Application
- Application Modalities: Specific application modalities are described on the University's website.
- Application Procedure: Students not holding the Master 1 GM from the University of Toulouse who wish to follow the Master 2 GM SMMS must submit an application file including academic results since the baccalaureate, a CV, and a letter of motivation.
Program
The syllabus is available in PDF format and includes a presentation of the year, the program of each Teaching Unit (UE) with associated bibliography, and the coordinates of the teacher in charge and the secretariat of the training.
Stage and Projects
- Internship: Obligatory internship in Master 2 for students in initial training, lasting 4 to 6 months, starting in early February. The internship can be carried out in a company or a research laboratory.
- Tutored Project: Several projects with an industrial character are supervised during the year, as well as an apprenticeship in bibliographic work synthesizing research work. These projects are the subject of oral defenses.
After the Program
Competences
- Define an experiment plan by mobilizing technical and organizational rules of the art in the considered domain (materials, measurements, structure calculation, processes, design).
- Develop numerical models using software from their technical domain.
- Model a mechanical system or mechanical behavior.
- Set up a test campaign.
- Analyze, understand, and exploit a numerical result to confront experimentation with the model.
- Elaborate and deploy a methodology for solving developed models.
Pursuit of Studies
- At UT3: Principally, in a thesis at the Institut Clément Ader.
- Outside UT3: In a thesis in other research laboratories.
