The Bachelor of Science in Mortuary Science and Funeral Service is a career-focused program that offers a comprehensive education in the field. The program is designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary to become a valuable asset in the funeral service profession.
Program Overview
The program offers a bachelor of science degree, making students eligible to be licensed in all 50 states. Students will study a wide range of courses, both in class and in lab, to give them the skills and resources needed to succeed in the funeral service profession.
Program Tracks
There are two program tracks available:
- Traditional 4-year B.S.: This track is for on-campus students who do not have an associate degree (AAS) in mortuary science. Graduates of the program will receive their Funeral Director License after earning their degree.
- Online Capstone: This track is designed for working professionals who have an AAS degree in mortuary science. The program can be completed in as little as two academic years (or 6 concurrent semesters).
Program Requirements
The program requirements for both tracks are as follows:
- Total Degree Requirements: 120 credit hours
- University Core Curriculum: 39 credit hours (Traditional 4-year B.S.) or 30 credit hours (Online Capstone)
- Requirements for Major: 76 credit hours
- Approved Career Electives: 5 credit hours
Internships
Students are encouraged to participate in an internship, which provides firsthand experience working in the funeral service industry. As an intern, students work side-by-side with a mentor to learn about mortuary tasks and practice under close supervision to develop their skills.
Admissions
The program has a rigid admissions process to maintain the quality required by the field. Students must meet the general admission requirements of Southern Illinois University. The online Bachelor of Science in Mortuary Science and Funeral Service degree requires an AAS degree in Mortuary Science and Funeral Service.
Accreditation
The Bachelor's degree program in Mortuary Science and Funeral Service is accredited by the American Board of Funeral Service Education. Students graduating from the program meet the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation licensing requirements. The program is recognized by other state boards as well.
Student Organization
Sigma Phi Sigma is a Mortuary Science and Funeral Service business fraternity that brings together students for social opportunities, community events, and business connections.
Program Outcomes
The program has a 92 percent graduation rate, and 83 percent of graduates are employed within two years of graduation. The program is designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in the funeral service profession.
