Art Education Program

The Art Education program is a vibrant and active educational community that offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) and Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree, as well as a minor. The program focuses on artist-teacher development, integrating art practice with art teaching, and provides hands-on classroom training and opportunities for service learning.

Program Overview

The program meets the Illinois State Board of Education standards for Professional Development in the Visual Arts and is fully accredited by the National Association for the Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). The two art education programs prepare and license students to teach in the public school system and non-traditional settings, with an emphasis on theory and practice.

Facilities

The program offers excellent facilities, including individual studio and exhibition space for students, a recently-renovated Vergette Gallery, and the historic Allyn building.

Teaching Roles and Internships

The program requires all students to participate in the Saturday Young Artists' Workshop, which focuses on teaching art to kindergarten-eighth grade children and provides experience in classroom management, curriculum development, and teaching skills.

Professional Licensure

The art education specialization works congruently with the Teacher Education Program, leading to an Initial Educator Licensure for grades K-12. Students must meet specific requirements, including passing a content area test and the edTPA, to be eligible for licensure.
