Associate of Applied Science in Aviation Flight

The Associate of Applied Science in Aviation Flight degree is designed to provide comprehensive flight education and prepare professional pilots to meet the current and future demands of the aviation industry.

Program Overview

The program is AABI Accredited and conducted at the Southern Illinois Airport, adjacent to the Transportation Education Center. Flight instruction is Federal Aviation Administration-approved, and FAA-designated check pilots monitor student performance as they progress through flight courses. Theory courses complement flight courses to provide a well-rounded education.

Degree Requirements

• Total degree requirements: 60 credit hours
  • University core curriculum: 15 credit hours
  • Aviation Flight Courses: 24 credit hours
  • Aviation Flight Technical Courses: 21 credit hours

Application and Admission

The Aviation Flight program is currently accepting applications for students interested in attending in Fall 2025.

Two-Plus-Two Program with Aviation Management

Students can complete the Associate in Applied Science in Aviation Flight in two academic years plus one summer at SIU or in cooperation with a community college. To earn the SIU degree, students must complete 21 semester hours of aviation flight at SIU. Most flight graduates also earn a Bachelor of Science in Aviation Management, setting them up for internship opportunities with major airlines.

Transfer Program

Aviation Management accepts transfer credits from colleges and universities nationwide, facilitating the transfer of aviation students to SIU. Course transfer agreements take full advantage of the Capstone Option for admission to the Bachelor of Science in Aviation Management.

Facilities

The Transportation Education Center, a 185,000-square-foot facility, houses the Aviation and Automotive Departments at the Southern Illinois Airport. The airport provides three lighted all-weather runways and an array of aircraft and pilot services.

Safety Management System

The Aviation Management and Flight programs are committed to implementing and maintaining a fully functional Safety Management System (SMS) to create a strong safety culture and ensure a safe environment for employees, students, and guests.

Flying Salukis

The Flying Salukis have won nine national titles and consistently finish in the top three teams regionally, offering students the opportunity to be part of a championship legacy.

Student Organizations

Students can expand their thinking and indulge their interests by joining various student clubs and organizations at SIU, developing leadership skills and meeting diverse groups of peers.

Fleet and Flight Simulation

The program offers top-notch flight training with a modern fleet composed primarily of Cessna aircraft. Students also train on FAA-approved flight training devices (FTDs) and other simulation devices that vary in purpose.

Scholarships and Funding

SIU provides scholarships, grants, and/or loans to make the college experience accessible and remove obstacles between people and discovery.
