Kid Architecture Camp

The Kid Architecture Camp is an award-winning program that introduces young people to the design of the built environment.

Program Details

• Duration: July 10-14, 2023
• Check-in: 8:30 am-4:30 pm, Monday-Friday
• Friday Field Trip: Local walking tour
• Program Location: SIU Carbondale, Quigley Hall
• Fees: $200.00, includes daily lunch, materials, limited access medical insurance, and quality instruction

Instructor

Dr. Jon Davey is the instructor for the Kid Architecture Camp, with 43 years of design teaching experience. His focus is on young people's ideas of what design is and their development of three-dimensional spatial skills. Dr. Davey has received several awards, including:

Program Overview

The Kid Architecture Camp is designed for students in grades 4-6. The program aims to teach students about buildings, design, and the built environment.

Learning Objectives

Students will learn about:

• Why buildings stand up
• Why buildings look the way they do
• How a building is designed, built, and reused
• What architects and interior designers do
• How and why people define space

Understanding the Built Environment

Students will gain an understanding of:

• Construction materials
• Computers in design
• The design process
• The importance of the built environment
• Design drawing as a problem-solving tool

Activities

The program includes various activities, such as:

• Exploring historic architecture
• Learning about the history of architecture with slides, discussion, and costumes
• Discussing how the built environment affects our behavior
• Engaging in the design process; brainstorming and critiquing
• Sketching, rendering, and building models
• Checking out computer graphics and computer-aided design (CAD)
• Visiting construction sites
• Trying their hand at casting concrete
• Joining in small-scale construction projects

Registration

Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Payment must accompany registration.

Registration Deadline

The registration deadline is not specified, but advance registration is highly recommended as the camp fills quickly.

Program Requirements

The Camp Release Form is required for camp participation and must be received in the office prior to the camp beginning.

Cancellation Policy

A refund, minus a $15 cancellation fee, will be issued upon written request received 7 business days before the beginning of the camp. At any time after that date, refunds (less the $15 non-refundable fee) are made for medical reasons only, and all such requests must have a signed statement from a physician.
