Music Business Program

The Music Business program at Southern Illinois University Carbondale is designed to immerse students in the vibrant and thriving global music industry. The program allows students to pursue careers in all fields of music business and become accomplished and knowledgeable leaders.

Program Overview

The program includes coursework in arts management, marketing, and promotion, as well as opportunities for hands-on experience in the music industry. Students can choose electives and selected courses to focus on their specific career goals and area of skill desired.

Bachelor of Art (Music Business)

The undergraduate major can be accomplished by fulfilling the requirements for the Bachelor of Art (B.A.) degree.

• Total Degree Requirements: 120 credit hours
  • University Core Curriculum: 39 credit hours
  • Theory: 16 credit hours
  • History-Literature: (3) + 5 credit hours
  • Conducting: 1 credit hour
  • Partial Recital: 1 credit hour
  • Specialization Requirements: 52 credit hours

Professional Opportunities

The music business curriculum offers several exciting professional opportunities through the program's courses.

• The commercial music course, which consists of five intensive sessions at BMI headquarters in Nashville, Tennessee, is a cornerstone course of the program.
• Faculty members can help arrange internships providing hands-on experience in both the artistic and professional aspects of the music industry.
• The senior project for music business majors allows students to explore specific career goals before entering the professional field.

Ensembles

Music majors are required to participate in major musical ensembles throughout the academic year, such as SIU's Concert Choir, Marching Salukis, Southern Illinois Symphony, or Wind Ensemble.

Scholarships

The SIU School of Music has more than 30 scholarships available, with a large variety of criteria existing for these awards.

Undergraduate Admissions and Auditions

To apply to the undergraduate music program, prospective students are required to submit both a university application and a School of Music application, as well as complete an in-person audition at Altgeld Hall on campus or a live online audition.
