Introduction to the Master's Programme in Materials Science and Chemical Engineering
The Master's programme in Materials Science and Chemical Engineering at NTNU is designed for students who want to dive deep into the science behind advanced materials and chemical processes, and apply this knowledge to solve real-world challenges. The programme offers a blend of theory, hands-on lab work, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Over two years, you will be part of a vibrant academic community at NTNU's Gl鷭haugen campus, working alongside leading researchers and fellow students from around the world. With the Master in Materials Science and Chemical Engineering, you will:
- Specialize in either materials science (e.g., metallurgy, energy technology, functional materials) or chemical engineering (e.g., catalysis, reactor design, membrane technology).

Programme Structure
The MSMATCH programme offers two specializations:
- Materials Science and Engineering
- Chemical Engineering All students take a common introductory course that highlights the synergy between the two fields. You will also choose elective courses, complete a research project, and write a master's thesis.
Course Structure
- Semester 1: Identity course for study program, elective course, elective course
- Semester 2: Experts in Teamwork, elective course, elective course, elective course
- Semester 3: Supplementary course, specialization course, specialization project
- Semester 4: Master's thesis
Admission
Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree in engineering, with relevant coursework in materials science and/or chemical engineering. There are additional requirements.
Admission Requirements
- A bachelor's degree in Materials Science and Engineering or Chemical Engineering, or a bachelor's degree in engineering, which includes:
- 30 ECTS in materials science and/or chemical engineering, of which at least 5 ECTS in general chemistry and 5 ECTS in thermodynamics
- An average grade of C or better from the bachelor's degree
- 25 ECTS in mathematics
- 5 ECTS in statistics
- 7.5 ECTS in physics Courses in physics, mathematics, and statistics are required to be standalone courses and not integrated in discipline-specific engineering courses.
Language Requirements
Applicants from outside of the Nordic countries to international master's degrees at NTNU need to document English proficiency. Accepted English proficiency tests include:
- TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) with a minimum score of 90 points on the internet-based test
- IELTS (International English Language Testing Service) Academic test with a minimum band score of 6.5 on each part of the test
- University of Cambridge tests (ESOL), at least one of the following: B2 First, C1 Advanced, C2 Proficiency
- Pearsons Academic English test (PTE) or PTE Academic Online with a minimum score of 62
Tuition Fees
There is no application fee. All students pay a semester fee of 700 NOK. For Norwegians and citizens of EU/EEA/Switzerland, there are no tuition fees. For citizens from outside the EU/EEA/Switzerland, the tuition fee is currently 205,600 NOK per academic year (60 ECTS).
Study Environment
The programme is taught in English and welcomes students from all backgrounds. NTNU's Gl鷭haugen campus offers a rich student experience, with access to modern labs, collaborative spaces, and a vibrant city life in Trondheim.
Student Life
You will attend a program with approximately 45 students from both Norway and around the world. This means it is very easy to get to know everyone. In addition, you have access to well-equipped research laboratories and study halls for students. Your MSc thesis is performed in close collaboration with your supervisor and other researchers/PhD students working on relevant topics. NTNU is also in close contact with the industry, so even collaboration with industry is possible. All experimental research laboratories are well equipped.

Your studies will take place at NTNU Gl鷭haugen Campus, which has a thriving international environment. In addition to being the largest campus at NTNU, Gl鷭haugen is located right outside Trondheim city center, next to Studentersamfundet, which hosts large concerts and many different events.
