Course Description
The course Advanced Logbuilding (TBBY1013) is based on the course Introduction to Carpentry (TBBY1010). Through hands-on work, group collaboration, and guidance, students gain experience in traditional carpentry, focusing on specific projects and topics such as floors, roof constructions, and foundation walls.
Course Content
The course covers various aspects of log houses, including:
- Floors and floor joists
- Roof constructions and roofing
- Combination buildings with horizontal timber and poles
- Foundation walls and foundations
- Local and regional carpentry traditions
- Historic log houses
- Tools and technology
Relevant restoration projects can be included as part of the course.
Learning Outcomes
Knowledge
The candidate will have knowledge of:
- Marking and chopping various log forms and novers in Norwegian carpentry
- Restoration methods for log houses
- Geographical and historical variation in carpentry in Norway
Skills
The candidate will be able to:
- Work in carpentry projects in collaboration with other carpenters
- Mark and chop at least two different novers with traditional hand tools
- Map and identify relevant damage to buildings and building parts
General Competence
The candidate will be able to:
- Document the construction and details of log houses and novers
- Use different sources to investigate local carpentry traditions

Evaluation
Two compulsory assignments, in the form of practical assignments, must be assessed and are the basis for passing or failing the course.
Specific Conditions
Admission to a program of study is required: Traditional Building Craft (FTTRADBYGG).
Recommended Previous Knowledge
Vocational training in construction crafts, such as carpentry or joinery, or equivalent practice as a craftsman. Own experience with traditional carpentry is recommended but not required.
Course Materials
The course materials will be relevant to the specific objects or projects being studied. Products produced by students as part of exercises or homework belong to the institution unless otherwise agreed upon with the student.
Credit Reductions
The course has academic overlap with TBBY1102. If overlapping courses are taken, a credit reduction will be applied to the course with the lowest grade. If the grades are the same, the reduction will be applied to the course completed most recently.
