Course Overview

The course Applied Mechanics and Fluid Systems, denoted as NAUT1002, is a foundational course offered at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). Course Content

The course covers basic mechanics, including forces and resultants, center of gravity, force- and moment-equilibrium, Newton's laws, motion, energy, and mass moment of inertia. Additionally, it delves into material properties, loads, and stresses in structures. Basic flow theory is also explored, encompassing Bernoulli's equation for flow in pipes and channels, pressure loss in components, and hydraulic components and systems such as valves, pumps, and heat exchangers.


Learning Outcome

Upon completion, students are expected to have in-depth knowledge of mechanics as per STCW chapters II/1 and II/2 and the STCW code A-II/1 and A-II/2 functions. They should also possess basic knowledge in mechanics and flow theory. Skills acquired include the ability to calculate forces, moments, and force-and moment balances, as well as simple stress calculations and assessing shear forces and bending moments acting on a hull in equilibrium.


Learning Methods and Activities

The course employs pedagogical methods such as lectures and exercises with supervision. Mandatory work requirements are also part of the course, where 2/3 of the work must be approved to qualify for the exam.

Evaluation

The course is evaluated through a 5-hour written exam, where aids allowed include a formula collection and a calculator. A re-sit exam is offered in the following semester.
