Program Overview


Course Overview

The course BI2065, Aquaculture, is an intermediate-level course that provides an introduction to the principles of aquaculture, including production technology, feed and nutrition, energetics, welfare, and environmental aspects. The course focuses on salmonids, but also covers aquaculture of marine fish species, mussel cultivation, and macroalgae cultivation.

Course Content

The course covers the basis for aquaculture, nationally and internationally, and provides an introduction to production technology for salmonids. Topics include:


  • Feed and nutrition
  • Energetics
  • Welfare
  • Importance of water treatment
  • Environmental aspects of aquaculture
  • Digitalization and automation in the aquaculture sector
  • Sustainable development of the sector
  • Organizational structure, industry actors, and management sector of the aquaculture sector

Learning Outcome

Upon completion of the course, students will have:


  • Knowledge: Principles for production of aquatic organisms, understanding of the production chain system in aquaculture, biological, technological, environmental, research-based, and international aspects of sea-based cultivation of fish, molluscs, and other aquatic organisms.
  • Skills: Ability to describe and evaluate types and design of aquaculture systems, principles for fish nutrition, and evaluate feed composition and growth.
  • General competence (attitudes): Ability to evaluate operation parameters and routines related to different operating conditions in aquaculture farms, and understand the role and impact of aquaculture as a food-producing sector.

Learning Methods and Activities

The teaching will be in Norwegian, and will include:


  • Lectures: 40 hours
  • Excursion: Up to 4 days to aquaculture companies

Evaluation

Examinations can be held orally outside the teaching semester. In case of fail or improvement of grade, a final exam is held during the exam period each semester.


Recommended Previous Knowledge

This course builds on previous knowledge corresponding to BI1001, BI1003, and BI1004/BI1006.
