Course Description
The course Architectural Design with Light and Colours (AAR4620) focuses on the effects of light and colour in an architectural context. It covers light in interiors and colours in exteriors, with specific assignments designed to explore these elements in depth.
Course Content
The course content includes:
- Design and construction of an exhibition in full-scale in the room laboratory
- Study of vertical light in architecture
- A final assignment that varies to reflect and respond to contemporary architectural challenges, such as infill projects or building rehabilitation
- Sustainability through the aesthetics of adaptation to, and preservation of, heritage forms and encouraging sustainable material choices and circularity in resource reuse
Learning Outcome
The course aims to give students:
- Knowledge of architectural design of architectural rooms with focus on the coherence between function and aesthetics in design, natural/artificial light and colours
- Skills in the design method of light distribution in rooms with the help of scale-models, photography of scale-models, and preparation of colour outlines
- General competence in architectural design
Learning Methods and Activities
The course includes varied forms of teaching, such as:
- Lectures and seminars
- Model studies in the light laboratory and full-scale experiments in the room laboratory
- Design of an individual architectural project
- A voluntary excursion, with an alternative teaching plan for students who do not participate
Evaluation
Assessment
The assessment is carried out as a portfolio assessment with corrective oral assessment. The portfolio must contain a digital booklet with specialist architectural drawings, illustrations, descriptive text, and model photographs that document the final project work.
Specific Conditions
- Admission to a programme of study is required: Architecture (MAAR) or Architecture (MAAR2)
- Completed three years of basic courses in architecture, bachelor in architecture, or equivalent
- The course is based on the colour and form courses at NTNU
- Students should also take the course AAR4850 Light and lighting in the same semester

Examination
Examination Arrangement
The examination arrangement is a portfolio assessment.
- Grade: Letter grades
- Weighting: 100/100
- Exam system: Inspera Assessment
Ordinary Examination
The ordinary examination is held in the spring semester. The postponed exam is carried out in the following semester, allowing students who have documented a valid failure/withdrawal at the previous ordinary exam to carry out normal study progression.
