Course Description
The Bachelor's Thesis in Media Studies (MV2014) is a final course where students develop and explore a topic of their choosing via a longer written work. Students gain further insights into the reading and writing of texts, the processing of information, the collection of empirical data, and the assessment of research and research methods within the subject area relevant to their topic.
Learning Outcomes
Knowledge
Upon successful completion of this course, students will have:
- General knowledge of a range of research topics in media studies.
- Basic knowledge of scholarly work processes in a media studies context.
- In-depth knowledge of a media studies topic of their own choosing.
Skills
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Formulate a research question of their own choosing, in consultation with their supervisor, based on theories and methods they have learned about in the course of their studies.
- Develop independent theoretical arguments, thorough analyzes, and valid conclusions about a media studies topic of their own choice.
- Produce a longer scholarly text that demonstrates a good command of various theories and methods from media studies.
Learning Methods and Activities
- Lectures and seminars.
- The course may be taught in Norwegian or English, pending staff availability.
- The bachelor's thesis can be written in Scandinavian or English. Every bachelor's thesis must include a Scandinavian and English summary.
- The student will develop a research question, as well as evaluate sources and literature for a self-chosen reading list. The research question will be pursued and the thesis will be written both in supervised seminars and under individual supervision.
Compulsory Assignments
- Submission of first draft of approx. 3000 words by the specified deadline.
- Submission of project description before the specified deadline.
Evaluation
- The final assessment is based on a written assignment, designed according to standard academic requirements, and is adjusted through an oral exam of about 30 minutes.
- In the oral examination, the student will have the opportunity to defend their written assignment and give their own assessment of their work.
- If the student fails the final assessment, both parts of the exam must be retaken. In this case, the thesis must have a new topic.
Specific Conditions
- Admission to a programme of study is required: Media Studies (BMV).
- Required previous knowledge: 60 credits in Media Studies.
Course Materials
- The reading list for the course consists of approx. 1200 pages. About 500 of these pages are selected by the student in consultation with the supervisor.

- MV2100 (15 sp) from Autumn 2020 If you take overlapping courses, you will receive a credit reduction in the course where you have the lowest grade. If the grades are the same, the reduction will be applied to the course completed most recently.
