Course Overview

Course Description

The course BM1 Construction Materials (TKT4240) provides a basic introduction to the properties of the four main classes of materials: metals, ceramics, polymers, and composites, with a special focus on steel, concrete, wood, and plastic materials. An engineer must have good knowledge about materials and their potential and limitations, which involves a fundamental knowledge of environmental and material properties of materials and how they are related to the material structure.

Learning Outcomes

  • Knowledge: The candidate will learn basic theory about main building- and construction materials, covering material composition, preparation, structure, properties, performance, and applications in buildings and structures.
  • Skills: The candidate should be able to make sensible and well-founded choices of materials.
  • General Knowledge: The candidate should understand how properties of materials that are important in engineering can be related to the characteristics of the material.
  • Digital Competence: Basic skills in Python (simple calculations, plot of graphs).
  • Sustainability Competence: The course serves to give the students skills to assess the choice of materials in a context of sustainability.

Learning Methods and Activities

The course includes lectures, laboratories, and written exercises.

Compulsory Assignments

  • Laboratory exercises and written exercises

Further on Evaluation

If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.

Recommended Previous Knowledge

None.

Course Materials

Will be announced at the first lecture.

Credit Reductions

The course has academic overlap with the following courses:

  • TBA4122: 7.5 sp, from Autumn 2012
  • TBA4123: 7.5 sp, from Autumn 2014
  • TMM4100: 7.5 sp, from Autumn 2020 If you take overlapping courses, you will receive a credit reduction in the course where you have the lowest grade. If the grades are the same, the reduction will be applied to the course completed most recently.
