Course Overview
Course Description
The course ALIT3303, Common Literary Syllabus - Modern Literature, is a second-degree level course offered at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. The curriculum consists of about ten works, including a minimum of three theoretical and five fictional works. The course instruction is in collaboration with ALIT2203.
Learning Outcomes
Candidates who successfully complete this course will have obtained the following general competencies:
- Specialized knowledge on a limited or specialized topic from 1800 to the present
- Understanding and reflection on literature in a more significant aesthetic, historical, social, and cultural context
- Ability to disseminate the academic content of the course critically and independently, both orally and in writing
- Ability to present and reflect on their acquired knowledge orally
Learning Methods and Activities
The course includes lectures and seminars, with active student participation expected. There are 1-3 compulsory assignments, which may include an approved reading list, approved written and/or oral assignments, and/or tests.

Evaluation
The form of assessment is a 2-week home examination of a given subject from the curriculum, with a word count of words.
Recommended Previous Knowledge
A Bachelor's degree with specialization in comparative literature or other relevant coursework equivalent to 80 credits is recommended.

A reading proposal will be available on the first day of class. Students decide their own curriculum based on this suggestion, but the list must be approved by the lecturer.
Credit Reductions
The course has academic overlap with HFALIT311, and if both courses are taken, a credit reduction will be applied to the course with the lowest grade.
