Course Overview
The course "Concern and Child protection and child welfare assessments" (BBV1004) is a foundation course at level I, worth 15 credits. It is taught in Norwegian and takes place over one semester, starting in the spring of 2026, in Trondheim.
Course Content
The subject deals with the complex professional and ethical assessments that the municipal child welfare services adhere to within the framework of the legislation. Students learn to assess how the situation of the child can impose different risks to the child's health and development through child protection reports and investigations. The course integrates theoretical knowledge, knowledge from practice, and knowledge from children and parents' point of view.
Learning Outcome
- Knowledge: The student has knowledge of the Act on Child Welfare Services, children and parents' rights, neglect, violence, abuse, challenging living conditions, substance abuse in families, children's needs, risk and protective factors, communication with children and parents, and digital tools relevant to the child welfare service.
- Skills: The student can apply legislation, identify and assess the needs of children and young people, conduct professional conversations, use aids to facilitate conversations with children, and show minority and cultural sensitivity.
- General Competence: The student can investigate and analyze children's care situations, plan and effectuate assignments in the municipal child welfare service, communicate with children and their families, and handle ethical and critical reflections.
Learning Methods and Activities
The course includes lectures, self-study, topic-based group work, practical activities related to communication, and practice studies.

Evaluation
Compulsory activities include theme-based group work, written work, and practical studies. All compulsory activities must be approved to take the exam, with a minimum of 80% participation in skills development training and theme-based group work required.
Specific Conditions
Admission to a program of study is required, specifically the Social Education and Child Welfare (HSGBVB) program or similar.
Recommended and Required Previous Knowledge
The subject builds on the program's previous subjects, and the course has study rights requirements, meaning it is reserved for students admitted to the Bachelor in Child Protection and Child Welfare at NTNU.

Credit Reductions
The course has academic overlap with BBV1002, and if taken, a credit reduction will be applied to the course with the lowest grade or the most recently completed course if grades are the same.

Examination
The examination arrangement is a school exam, with a weighting of 100/100, allowing specific examination aids. The exam is 4 hours long and uses the Inspera Assessment system.
