Course Details

The course code for Econometrics is S陯1005. It is a foundation course, level I, with 7.5 credits. The course starts in the autumn of 2025 and lasts for one semester. The language of instruction is English and Norwegian, and the course is located in Trondheim.


Course Content

About the Course

The course builds upon the bachelor course in statistics (S陯1004) and provides students with the necessary skills for analyzing and interpreting data, both in the univariate and in the multivariate case. Students will learn to distinguish random variation from systematic variation and causality from correlation.


Learning Outcome

Knowledge

  • Define basic concepts underpinning data analysis, such as mean, variance, and hypothesis testing.
  • Define and derive the Ordinary least squares estimator (OLS).
  • Present the basic assumptions underlying the OLS estimator.
  • Evaluate the credibility of causal claims in simple empirical applications.

Skills

  • Obtain summary statistics, tests, and regression estimates.
  • Interpret summary statistics and basic regression results.
  • Criticize and evaluate simple empirical applications.
  • Write simple statistical programs with statistical and econometric software.

General Competence

  • Describe data and economic relationships based on data.
  • Distinguish correlation from causation.
  • Acquire basic programming skills.
  • Develop a reflective and critical approach to the practice of data analysis in economics.

Learning Methods and Activities

The course consists of 2 hours of lectures every week and 2 hours of practical assignments every other week. The course has compulsory activity, with specific requirements announced at the beginning of the term.
