Course Content
Introduction

- Chemical reactions, reaction equations, and stoichiometry

- Acids, bases, pH, buffer solutions, and titration
- Solubility, solubility product, and precipitation reactions
- Oxidation and reduction reactions (oxidation numbers and balancing)
- Chemical substances and HSE
Learning Outcomes
The student should be able to:
- Explain basic atomic theory, orbital theory, and the periodic table
- Apply nomenclature rules to name inorganic compounds
- Explain fundamental chemical bonding theories and create Lewis structures
- Demonstrate an understanding of key types of chemical reactions and perform calculations based on stoichiometry
- Set up and balance oxidation and reduction reactions
- Calculate enthalpy and determine whether reactions are exothermic or endothermic
- Explain the concept of chemical equilibrium and apply Le Chatelier's principle
- Conduct simple chemical experiments and document results in basic reports

Required for the final examination:

- 6 out of 10 theory exercises must be passed

Examination
The examination arrangement is a school exam with a weighting of 100/100. Permitted aids on the exam include Gordon Aylward and Tristan Findlay: SI Chemical Data, Wiley, and simple calculators. The exam is 4 hours long and uses the Inspera Assessment exam system.
