Course Details
The course code is BTA1001, and the course name is General Microbiology. The course is worth 7.5 credits and is a foundation course at level I. It starts in the autumn of 2025 and lasts for one semester. The language of instruction is Norwegian, and the course is located in Ĺlesund.
Course Content
About the Course
The course covers microbial working techniques, viruses, prokaryotic and eukaryotic microorganisms, growth, metabolism, and cell division. It also includes basic bacterial genetics and systematics, the importance of growth media and external factors for growth and control of growth, antibiotics, pathogenic, harmful, and useful microorganisms, contamination, sources and routes of contamination, and basic production hygiene, cleaning, and disinfection.
Learning Outcome
- Knowledge: The student will have knowledge of what promotes growth and what inhibits the growth of microorganisms, various forms of metabolism in microorganisms, different groups of microorganisms and diversity within the groups, microorganisms as a cause of disease and microorganisms as useful partners, where contamination can come from, how different contaminants can be transmitted, and how to prevent such transmission, and similarities and inequalities between cell types.
- Skills: The student will be able to create microbial growth media, work aseptically at the lab, grow microorganisms, and use the microscope as a work tool.
- Competence: The student will have a basic understanding of microbiology and microbial work techniques.
Learning Methods and Activities
The educational methods include lectures, group projects, and laboratory courses with compulsory exercises. The compulsory work requirements include a group project and all laboratory exercises with reporting, which must be approved. The student is expected to have a self-contribution of 200 hours, of which up to 40 hours are lectures and up to 20 hours of laboratory work.

Mandatory assignments must be approved in order to take the exam. The exam is a 4-hour written examination. Approved mandatory assignments are valid for 4 semesters.
