Program Overview

Course Overview

The course Geodetic Control Networks (GEOM2410) is an intermediate-level course that focuses on the principles and methods of geodetic control networks. The course is offered in Norwegian and is worth 7.5 credits.

Course Details

  • Level: Intermediate course, level II
  • Credits: 7.5
  • Course start: Spring 2026
  • Duration: 1 semester
  • Language of instruction: Norwegian
  • Location: Gjřvik
  • Examination arrangement: Aggregate score

About the Course

Course Content

The course covers a range of topics, including:

  • Error theory and error propagation
  • Weights of observations
  • Least squares method; mathematical fundaments
  • Adjustment calculation using least squares method
  • Developing observation equations (from leveling, angle- and distance observations)
  • Adjustment of level nets (matlab/python)
  • Adjustment of resection (free stationing) (matlab/python)
  • Adjustment of networks (off the shelf software)
  • Blunder detection, goodness of fit test, internal reliability, external reliability and the related Norwegian standards
  • Network analyses (off the shelf software)
  • Coordinate transformations (matlab/python)

Learning Outcome

After completing the course, students will have a good understanding of the principles of Least Squares based adjustment calculations and analyses of surveying data. They will also gain knowledge on using popular surveying software packages and performing analyses of data from different observation methods.

Learning Methods and Activities

The course includes:

  • Lectures
  • Project work
  • Supervision
  • Compulsory work requirements that must be completed at the campus of NTNU in Gjřvik

Evaluation

The course evaluation consists of a portfolio (40% of the grade) and an oral exam (60% of the grade). The portfolio includes four assignments that must be passed, and the oral exam is held at the end of the semester. A retake oral exam is held in August for students who fail the first exam.
