Course Description
The course "Heating and Cooling Systems in Buildings" (FENT2032) is an intermediate-level course that focuses on the principles and design of heating and cooling systems in buildings. Course Content
- Heat transfer; heat transfer mechanisms, thermal transmittance, heat exchangers
- Heat transfer through conduction, convection, and radiation
- Hydronic heating systems; energy sources, configuration, working principles, pipe sizing, pump capacity, expansion and safety systems, balancing, capacity control, shunt systems, heat storage, low-temperature systems
- District heating; heating plant, network, customer systems
- Heat pumps; thermodynamics, components, working fluids, control, system solutions

The candidate will have knowledge of:
- Heat transfer through conduction, convection, and radiation
- Working principles of heat exchangers
- Different hydronic heating system solutions, including low-temperature systems
- Relevant energy sources for hydronic heating systems
- Expansion and safety systems for hydronic heating systems
- Procedures for hydronic heating system balancing
- District heating systems, including heat plants, networks, and customer systems
- Different system solutions, components, and working fluids for heat pump systems
- Heat pump process control
Skills
The candidate will be able to:
- Calculate thermal resistance and thermal transmittance for different constructions
- Calculate power and energy needs for heating/cooling
- Size and construct hydronic heating systems
- Size and construct heat pumps and cooling systems
- Calculate the performance of different heat pump processes
- Balance hydronic heating systems
- Use digital tools for building performance simulation
General Competence
The candidate will be able to:
- Communicate with architects, building consultants, and other stakeholders in the building industry regarding integration of heating/cooling systems in buildings
- Assess the consequences of choice of energy sources and system solutions for heating/cooling systems
- Communicate insight into opportunities and limitations regarding heating/cooling system alternatives to different stakeholders
- Discuss opportunities for innovation and development within heating and cooling systems for buildings
