About the Course

Course Content

The aim of this seminar is for students to familiarize themselves with a specific new topic within the field of industrial ecology, critically review and assess information from scientific literature, structure and communicate complex information in an understandable manner, and learn how to initiate, participate in, and moderate scientific debates and discussions. The course is split into two parts: the first part consists of lectures and exercises on approaches for reviewing literature, synthesizing findings, and structuring texts and presentations, while the second part focuses on the execution of the theory and skills obtained in the first part.


Learning Outcome

  • Knowledge: After the course, students will have gained knowledge in critically reviewing and synthesizing findings in scientific literature, the scientific content of a specific sub-field of industrial ecology, how to structure scientific texts and presentations, rhetoric and presentation skills, and participation in scientific debates.
  • Competences: The student shall learn how to critically review, reflect, and discuss information from scientific literature, clearly present results and scientific concepts to an audience, and lead a scientific discussion.

Learning Methods and Activities

The course consists of two parts: lectures and exercises, and presentations and discussions led by the students. The whole lecture, including presentations, will be in English. 40% of the grade consists of the oral presentation, the written summary, and the moderation of the following discussion. 60% of the grade consists of an oral exam on the content of the lectures and the assigned scientific literature. Compulsory assignments include each student being responsible for one presentation and the moderation of the following discussion.

60% of the grade consists of the oral presentation and the moderation of the following discussion. 40% of the grade consists of the written report on the chosen presentation topic. For a re-take of an examination, all assessments during the course must be re-taken.


Recommended and Required Previous Knowledge

  • Recommended Previous Knowledge: None.
  • Required Previous Knowledge: None. Interested participants with no knowledge in industrial ecology will be provided with a small crash course to understand the most important basics. The main focus of the course is on communication and presentation.
