Course Details
The course is titled International Internship, with the course code SARB3011. It is a 15-credit course, offered at the second degree level. About the Course
Course Content
The internship provides students with insights into how social work is performed in different international contexts abroad. It also gives students the opportunity to use the qualifications acquired through their study programme in practical contexts. The experience from the internship increases the student's awareness of their own competence, contributes to the student's academic development, and constitutes work experience that will be valued and useful in a professional career.
During the internship, students undertake an independent assignment that ends in an individual report. The individual assignment must fulfill the academic requirements of a master's level programme and be informed by relevant theories, topics, and concepts connected to the programme. The areas of research covered by the programme include:
- Social work in International Contexts
- Social Change
- Inclusion/Exclusion
- Mobility and Cultural Knowledge
- Cross-Cultural Management
- Understandings and Transfer of Knowledge
Learning Outcome
A student who has completed this course should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills, and general competence:
- Knowledge: Have obtained in-depth knowledge of how an organization works in practice with social work and service provision in an international context.
- Skills: Can conduct an independent project where they apply the academic knowledge they have acquired in social work related to concrete challenges.
- General competence: Have practical work experience and competence in developing networks, writing reports, and engaging in analysis that connects theory and practice.
Learning Methods and Activities
The students will have individual supervision from both NTNU and the company/organization. Students can establish contact with companies/organizations on their own. NTNU assists in establishing contact at the start of the course if the student has not established this on their own.

Specific Conditions
Admission to a programme of study is required:
- Disability and Society (MFUNKSAM)
- Social work (MSARB)
Required Previous Knowledge
The course has admission right requirements, which means that the course is reserved for students who have been admitted to study Master's degree in Disability and Society and Master's degree in Social Work at NTNU.
Evaluation and Examination
Compulsory Assignments

Further on Evaluation
The examination in this course will be an individual assignment related to the internship/work project. The assignment is worth 100% of the final grade. The assignment amounts to 15 credits and should be close to 5000 words (+-10%). The assignment will be graded passed/failed by the NTNU supervisor.
