Course Overview
Introduction to Timber Framing
The course TBBY1014, Introduction to Timber Framing, is a foundation course at level I, worth 15 credits. It is scheduled to start in the autumn of 2025 and will last for one semester. The language of instruction is Norwegian, and the course will be held in Trondheim.
Course Content
Traditional Rod Constructions
In Norway, there is a rich tradition of different local and regional types of traditional rod constructions. These constructions are often used for utility houses that are not meant to be heated. The course will introduce students to the working methods used in the construction of such buildings, based on concrete examples of older traditional stave buildings.
Learning Outcome
Knowledge
The candidate will have knowledge of:
- Construction principles in different types of stave buildings with joists and roof layers
- The operation of the various constructive parts of traditional stave buildings
- Different quality requirements for materials for different parts of traditional pole buildings and roof constructions
Skills
The candidate will be able to:
- Take out their own timber and make the workpiece ready for use in a stave building
- Perform common joints used in traditional rod constructions using traditional working methods and tools
- Use and maintain traditional hand tools used to build traditional stave buildings
General Competence
The candidate will be able to describe the different parts of ordinary stave buildings with traditional names.
Learning Methods and Activities
The course will include study collections with an introduction to practical work and self-practice. Exercises, excursions, fieldwork, seminars, and lectures may also be included. The course is based on concentrated collections, and active participation in the sessions with the following exercises is necessary to complete the course.

Evaluation
The course will be concluded with a written assignment, and the evaluation will be on a pass/fail basis. In the event of absence or failure, the assignment must be taken by a new deadline by agreement with the course coordinator.
Specific Conditions
Admission to a program of study is required, specifically the Traditional Building Craft (FTTRADBYGG) program.
Recommended Previous Knowledge
It is recommended that students have completed TBBY1010, Introduction to Carpentry, to have received a basic introduction to forestry work and extraction of timber.
Required Previous Knowledge
There are no mandatory prerequisites for this course.
Course Materials
In addition to the reading list, material will be distributed in connection with excursions and fieldwork that is relevant to the projects being studied. Products produced by the student as part of exercises or homework belong to the institution unless otherwise agreed with the student.
Credit Reductions
The course has academic overlap with the following courses:

- TBBY6314 (15 credits, Autumn 2024) If a student takes overlapping courses, they will receive a credit reduction in the course where they have the lowest grade. If the grades are the same, the reduction will be applied to the course completed most recently.
