Course Content
- Overview of Norway's and the world's energy situation
- Basic chemistry and thermodynamics
- Environmental challenges with energy production (CO2 and NOx emissions)
- Different forms of renewable energy (hydropower, wind power, solar energy, bioenergy, salt power, and thermal power)
- Comparison of renewable energy with other forms of electricity production such as coal power, gas power, diesel power, and nuclear power
- Heat pumps, heat recovery, EN陯 measures for buildings, passive houses, and plus houses
- Carbon capture and storage (CCS)
- Circular economy and sustainability within renewable energy
Learning Outcome
The candidate will have knowledge of:
- Basic engineering methodology
- Basic sustainability analyses
- Basic professional ethics and health, environment, and safety (HSE)
- Basic digitization (e.g., use of Matlab and Python programming)
- Various forms of energy production
- Norwegian energy supply and energy use together with the national and international energy situation
- Environmental problems related to energy production and energy use
- Various measures for energy efficiency
- Research and development work within the field of renewable energy
- Innovation and entrepreneurship within renewable energy
The candidate will be able to:
- Update their knowledge within the field through information gathering
- Apply knowledge to solve theoretical, technical, and practical problems within the fields of energy production
- Assess the energy and environmental consequences of various energy solutions
- Make simple calculations on heating and cooling systems
- Find, assess, use, and refer to information and subject matter and present this in such a way that it illuminates an issue within Renewable Energy
The candidate must be able to:
- Evaluate different methods of energy production against each other
- Consider appropriate measures for energy efficiency
- Assess the role of engineers in society

Evaluation
The course is evaluated through a written school examination that lasts 4 hours. To pass the course, 8 out of 10 exercises must be approved. A re-sit examination will be held in August and may be changed from written to oral.

Admission to a programme of study is required, specifically the Renewable Energy - Engineering (BIFOREN) programme.

Examination
