Program Overview
Course Overview
The course "Marine Machinery - Thermal systems and Energy efficiency" is offered at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). The course code is TMR4222.
Course Details
- Credits: 7.5
- Level: Second degree level
- Course start: Autumn 2025
- Duration: 1 semester
- Language of instruction: English
- Location: Trondheim
Course Content
Introduction to marine machinery systems, technology, design, performance, and control of auxiliary systems. The course covers thermal engineering basics, focusing on heat transfer and heat exchanger systems, thermofluid systems, pumps and liquid transfer systems, hydraulic systems, steam and HVAC systems, plus energy efficiency, waste heat recovery, and energy harvesting.
Learning Outcome
After completing this course, students should be able to:
- Understand and assess the importance of technology, heat transfer, and thermofluid systems in relation to safe and economical energy-efficient design, operation, and control of marine machinery systems.
- Understand and carry out calculations for heat transfer mechanisms in thermal systems relevant for marine applications.
- Understand, design, and evaluate heat exchanger systems, their operation, and control in marine applications.
- Understand, design, and evaluate basic hydraulic systems, their operation, and control in marine applications.
- Understand and carry out design and performance calculations for pump- and liquid transfer systems, steam- and HVAC systems.
- Understand, design, and evaluate options for solutions and technology for waste heat recovery and energy harvesting in marine machinery systems.
Learning Methods and Activities
The course includes lectures, exercises, computer exercises, and laboratory exercises. All lectures will be in English.
Compulsory Assignments
- Compulsory exercises
Evaluation
The course uses aggregated assessment as the basis for the grade. A written school exam counts for 70%, and project work counts for 30%. A letter grade is given for each part, and a final letter grade will be assigned. Examination papers will be in English, but students can choose Norwegian or English for written assessments. Postponed or repeated exams may be oral, and for a re-take, all assessments during the course must be re-taken.
