Course Overview
The course TMR4225, Marine Operations, is a 7.5-credit course offered at the second degree level. It commences in the spring of 2026 and spans one semester. The language of instruction is English, and the course is located in Trondheim.
Course Content
The course presents challenges related to marine operations, including the installation and operation of offshore oil and gas fields, aquaculture installations, and floating wind turbines. Topics covered include towing of offshore structures, crane operations, mooring, pipelining, offshore loading, and subsea operations. The course also touches on the design and operation of subsea vehicles and factors influencing the regularity of critical operations.
Learning Outcome
Upon completing the course, students will have acquired knowledge of the most important marine operations within the industries of offshore wind turbines, offshore oil and gas assets, and aquaculture facilities. They will understand the different subsea operations related to monitoring and mapping of the ocean space and seabed. Students will also be able to estimate weather windows and waiting time, understand the overall behavior of marine structures due to wave, wind, and current exposure, and use simple models to estimate motion behavior and forces involved in crane operations.
Learning Methods and Activities
The course consists of lectures and exercises. Compulsory assignments include exercises, and the final grading is based on a written exam (100%). Students can choose to write their assessments in either Norwegian or English.
Recommended Previous Knowledge
Recommended previous knowledge includes subjects such as Marine Structures, BC.
Course Materials
Course materials include lecture notes by F.G. Nielsen, course notes by S. Sævik, K. Larsen, and M. Ludvigsen, and the "Veritas Marine Operation" rules and regulations by DNV.
Credit Reductions
The course has academic overlap with SIN1546, and students taking both courses will receive a credit reduction in the course with the lowest grade.

Examination
The examination arrangement is a school exam, with a weighting of 100/100. The exam is 4 hours long, and the examination aids allowed are specified by code D. The ordinary examination takes place in the spring of 2026, and the re-sit examination is in the summer of 2026.
