Program Overview


Course Overview

The course TMR4106, Marine Technology 1 - Introduction, is a foundation course at level I, worth 7.5 credits. It starts in the autumn of 2025 and lasts for one semester. The language of instruction is Norwegian, and the course is located in Trondheim.


Course Content

The course consists of three main themes:


  1. Application of marine technology in vessels, including report writing, presentation skills, and technical drawing. It also introduces the Norwegian maritime industry, describing the marine ocean and resources, the marine industrial cluster, administration, legislation, and regulations.
  2. Hydrostatics and stability of marine vessels.
  3. Introduction to design methodology of marine systems.

Learning Outcome

The course aims to enable students to describe and understand the basics of marine technology and carry out engineering tasks related to the design, construction, and operation of marine systems. After completing the course, students should be able to:


  • Understand and describe how marine disciplines interact.
  • Understand and apply marine technical terminology and language, both orally and in writing.
  • Understand and use technical descriptions and drawings of marine vessels.
  • Understand and map the interaction of technical systems on board marine vessels.
  • Perform laboratory experiments effectively within the requirements of HSE (health, safety, and environment) and analyze and evaluate the results.
  • Understand how marine vessels are designed and built and perform a simple design task of a marine system.
  • Perform calculations of hull buoyancy, buoyancy distribution, and load capacity of floating vessels.
  • Perform calculations of static and dynamic stability in intact condition.
  • Apply computer-based tools for calculations of hydrostatics and stability.
  • Evaluate the economic and environmental sustainability of a project in a life cycle perspective.
  • Plan and implement a holistic design of a single vessel in collaboration with other students within agreed limits and time and effectively report and present the results.

The topics are illustrated through lectures, assignments, laboratory activities, excursions, and project work.

Evaluation

The final assessment of the course is based on two elements: a presentation of the project (40%) and a written exam (60%). The results for the parts are given in letter grades. To pass the course, all parts of the exam must be passed. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may change from written to oral. For a re-take of an examination, all assessments during the course must be re-taken.


Specific Conditions

Admission to a program of study is required, specifically Industrial Economics and Technology Management (MTI傞) or Marine Technology (MTMART).

Credit Reductions

This course has academic overlap with TMR4105 and SIN0501. If overlapping courses are taken, a credit reduction will be applied to the course with the lowest grade. If the grades are the same, the reduction will be applied to the course completed most recently.

The examination arrangement is an aggregate score with letter grades. The ordinary examination in autumn 2025 includes a school exam (60%) and a presentation (40%). The re-sit examination in summer 2026 may have a different examination form.
