Course Description

The course TBA4140, Masonry Structures, provides basic knowledge in calculation and design of masonry structures and masonry buildings. It covers structural analysis of loadbearing brick and block masonry, structural design of walls, columns, and beams in unreinforced and reinforced masonry, production of masonry, and properties of constituents.

Knowledge

The candidate should have knowledge of:


  • Structural analysis of loadbearing brick and block masonry
  • Structural design of walls, columns, and beams in unreinforced and reinforced masonry
  • Production of masonry and properties of constituents
  • Application of simple structural models for calculation and design of building parts and detailing
  • Engineering, design, and construction of building elements and details
  • Masonry construction work

The candidate is able to:


  • Perform structural design of walls, columns, and beams
  • Explain the static behavior of masonry structures
  • Select measures for moisture protection, heat insulation, sound insulation, and fire insulation of masonry structures
  • Design movement joints
  • Select materials and execution for durable masonry structures
  • Draft design and material use in building parts and their joints

The candidate has:


  • An understanding of requirements, influences, and physical and material relations as a basis for designing assemblies and buildings that fulfill requirements regarding reliability, performance, and sustainability
  • A good background for communicating with other disciplines involved in design, construction, and operation of buildings
