Program Overview

Master's Production and Master's Thesis in Film and Video Production

Course Details

The Master's Production and Master's Thesis in Film and Video Production is a 60-credit course at the second degree level. The course starts in the autumn of 2025 and lasts for 2 semesters. The language of instruction is Norwegian, and the location is Trondheim.

Course Content

The course consists of two parts: a practical Master's Production and a theoretical Master's Thesis.

  • Practical Part: Master's Production
    • The Master's Production is a substantial fiction or documentary project at a professional production and technical level.
    • The production constitutes an experiential disciplinary immersion and exploration of one or more film production roles.
    • The Master's Production is typically produced as a team project but can be realized as an individual project under certain conditions.
  • Theoretical Part: Master's Thesis
    • The theoretical Master's Thesis is an independent written work comparable in scope and depth to a short scientific article.
    • The Master's Thesis must demonstrate the candidate's ability to define and investigate a production-related film studies argument, contributing new insights to research in the field.

Learning Outcome

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will have:

  • Knowledge
    • Practical-theoretical issues related to developing, planning, and completing large-scale film and video productions.
    • In-depth knowledge of the practical, production-related areas of expertise the Master's Production actualizes.
    • In-depth knowledge of specific fields within film studies that the self-selected topic of the Master's Thesis focuses upon.
  • Skills
    • Ability to independently plan, develop, and lead the work of large-scale film and video productions (Master's Production).
    • Ability to independently manage and exercise one or more self-selected film production roles connected to the realization of the Master's Production.
    • Ability to independently formulate, plan, and carry out a research-based written work (Master's Thesis).
    • Ability to communicate reasoning in adequate professional language, use relevant theories and methods appropriately, and according to academic standards.
    • Ability to reflect critically on one's own professional practice and adjust it under supervision.

Learning Methods and Activities

  • Individual and team-based supervision of production work.
  • Individual supervision of the written thesis.
  • The volume of the thesis is approximately 6000 words, excluding front page, preface, table of content, literature, and attachments.
  • Students must write an abstract of the thesis, approximately 1/2 to 1 page, in Norwegian and preferably also in English.

Evaluation

  • The final assessment includes separate grades for the Master's Thesis and the Master's Production.
  • The two parts are weighted, with 75% for the Master's Production and 25% for the Master's Thesis in the calculation of the final grade.
  • Oral exams lasting up to 60 minutes are used to adjust the grades.
