About the Course
Course Content
The course covers a wide range of topics including arithmetics and algebra, exponential functions and logarithms, differentiation, integration and differential equations, multivariable functions, errors in analytical analysis, probability calculations, stochastic variables, probability distributions, descriptive statistics, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, and linear regression.
Learning Outcome
Knowledge
The candidate will have knowledge on:
- Good techniques for algebraic manipulations
- Mathematical logical thinking
- The use of mathematical calculations
- Analytical errors in laboratory work
- The concepts of accuracy and precision
- Probability calculations
- Stochastic variables and probability distributions
- The term confidence interval
- The term hypothesis testing
- The term linear regression
Skills
The candidate will be able to:
- Perform calculations on and reshape mathematical expressions with symbols and numbers
- Present experimental data graphically and using key numbers
- Treat linear functions, power functions, exponential functions, and logarithmic functions, and differentiate such functions
- Calculate integrals and solve simple differential equations
- Perform basic probability calculations
- Choose probability models and perform calculations on these
- Calculate confidence intervals for expectation
- Perform hypothesis tests regarding expectation
- Calculate the linear regression line and coefficient of correlation
General Competency
The candidate will be able to use mathematics, statistics, and probability calculations to understand calculations on measurement results and present these to others. They will also have an understanding of mathematics, statistics, and probability as a basis for further studies.
Learning Methods and Activities
The course includes lectures and exercises, with a focus on using Excel spreadsheets for practical applications.
Compulsory Assignments
- Digital calculation exercises: There are five compulsory digital calculation exercises that must all be approved for the student to be eligible to take the exam. The requirements for approval will be published through the learning management system.
Evaluation
Permitted Aids on the Exam
- Approved calculator in accordance with NTNU's support material code B-D "specific basic calculator".
- Collection of formulas for Norwegian upper secondary education, i.e., Gyldendals formelsamling i matematikk for Norwegian upper secondary education from 2023.
Re-sit Exam
In the event of a re-sit exam, the written exam can be changed to an oral exam. The re-sit exam is scheduled for August.
