About the Course
This course explores the aesthetic, narrative, and political potential of various popular media forms within contemporary culture. Drawing on theories of media aesthetics and established approaches to media analysis, students will learn about similarities and differences between media as aesthetic forms. The course provides the opportunity to pursue case study-oriented research on a media form of the student's choosing.
Learning Outcome
Upon successful completion of this course, students will have:
- Knowledge: About the similarities and differences between media as aesthetic forms, broad knowledge about a range of theories of media aesthetics, and in-depth knowledge about different approaches to the aesthetic analysis of media.
- Skills: To apply appropriate terms and concepts to analyze different media as aesthetic forms, critically and independently evaluate theoretical arguments about media as aesthetic forms, and independently pursue case study-oriented research.
Learning Methods and Activities
The course includes lectures and seminars. It may be taught in Norwegian and English, pending staff availability. Compulsory assignments include a group presentation and an individual written assignment.
Evaluation
The final assessment is based on a letter-graded term paper. Recommended previous knowledge includes MV1100 Introduction to Media Studies, but there are no required previous knowledge prerequisites.
Course Materials
A list of set readings of approximately 1200 pages is provided at the start of the term. Students are expected to read one foundational text each week, with three additional readings recommended each week throughout the semester.
