Course Overview
The master's thesis in Nanotechnology is a one-semester course that provides students with the opportunity to work independently on a project linked to ongoing research activities at the Department of Chemical Engineering.
Course Details
- Course Code: TKP4905
- Credits: 30
- Level: Second degree level
- Course Start: Spring 2026
- Duration: 1 semester
- Language of Instruction: English and Norwegian
- Location: Trondheim
- Examination Arrangement: Master thesis
About the Course
Course Content
The master's thesis consists of an independent project work, normally linked to ongoing research activities at the Department of Chemical Engineering. Students will learn to work systematically in a specific area of chemical process technology during the semester and acquire detailed knowledge through practical work and literature studies, and theoretical work.
Learning Outcome
Knowledge
- The project provides the student with detailed knowledge within one or several central areas of chemical engineering within catalysis, process systems engineering, colloid and polymer chemistry, environmental engineering, or reactor technology.
- Students should understand how their work connects to sustainable development in chemical engineering.
Skills
- Carry out major independent work using scientific methods, e.g., obtaining supplementary knowledge through literature studies and other source searches and combining this with own knowledge.
- Master the implementation of an independent project, and take necessary action during the project period in order to achieve the desired results.
- Describe, analyse, discuss, and compare the results with relevant works and evaluate achieved results scientifically.
- Understand how their work connects to sustainable development in chemical engineering.
General Competence
- Students should have the ability to apply their expertise in developing and designing solutions.
- Students should have the ability to specialize theoretically and practically within a specific topic.
- Students should have the ability to carry out independent project work, report sub-results, and write a project report according to adopted standards.
- Students know some of the concepts used to evaluate sustainability in the industry.
Learning Methods and Activities
All students doing their master's thesis at the Faculty of Natural Sciences should conclude an agreement regarding counselling. This is done via the electronic registration system, DAIM. The standard contact period with the supervisor/s is 25 hours. Any contact between supervisor/s and student beyond this depends on the supervisor/s choice of supervision methodology. It is expected that the student works independently beyond the standard contact period.
