Course Overview

Course Description

The course "Perspectives: how to think like an anthropologist" (SANT1024) is designed to provide students with an understanding of anthropological ways of thinking and seeing the world. Through this course, students will learn to demonstrate anthropological perspectives and concepts, and apply them to practical observation and writing assignments.

The course will cover the following topics:


  • Anthropological analysis and its characteristics
  • Understanding people's lives on their own terms
  • Suspending cultural biases and assumptions
  • Studying locally specific cases and practices
  • Using comparison to highlight differences
  • Anthropological critique and its aims
  • Worldviews and experiences of people on the fringes of global structures

Learning Outcome

Upon completing this course, students should have the following learning outcomes:


  • Knowledge: Understanding of anthropological perspectives and central concepts
  • Skills: Ability to use anthropological perspectives, concepts, and terms to analyze real-world examples
  • General Competence: Ability to make observations, discuss them in light of academic literature, and communicate academic material through presentations and writing

Learning Methods and Activities

The course will include:


  • Lectures and seminars (some lectures may be given in English)
  • Mandatory activities and lectures that may start prior to the registration deadline

Evaluation

  • The examination is a 6-hour written exam (worth 100% of the final grade)
  • Same form of examination is given when re-sitting for the exam or improving the grade
  • The written exam is offered both in the autumn and spring semester
  • Compulsory assignments must be completed and approved to be eligible to take the exam
