Program Overview
Course Overview
The Port and Sea Operation course is a foundation course at level I, worth 7.5 credits. It is taught in Norwegian and takes place over one semester, starting in the autumn of 2025. The course is located in 儻esund and includes a combination of lectures, ship and port visits, as well as individual and group exercises.
Course Content
The course covers several key areas, including:
- Ship and port development, with emphasis on development phases, port classification, terminals, and the impact of ship development on ports.
- Different ship types, their equipment, and purpose.
- Ports and port terminals, including their construction, equipment, functionality, and role in the transport chain.
- Technology and its impact on the maritime industry.
- International and national maritime authorities, conventions, and regulations.
- Quality and safety management requirements in the maritime industry.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students will have acquired:

- About the economic importance of ports and their role in international trade.
- About the requirements for a port to be functional, efficient, and competitive.
- About ship construction, equipment, and functions.
- About technological developments in the subject area.
- About societal, environmental, safety, ethical, and financial consequences related to the subject area.
- The ability to use scientific methodology to prepare written reports.

Evaluation
The course evaluation consists of two parts:
- A portfolio assessment (40% of the final grade), which includes two group assignments.
- A written school exam (60% of the final grade), lasting three hours.
Course Materials
Course materials will be announced at the beginning of the semester.
Subject Areas
The course falls under the subject area of Nautic.
Examination
The examination arrangement includes both portfolio assessment and a written examination. The ordinary examination takes place in the autumn, with a re-sit examination in the spring. The examination aids allowed are specified as Code E for the school exam.
