The course "Position and Survey Systems" is no longer taught and is only available for examination. It is a third-year course, level III, with 3 credits.

Course Content
The course covers definitions and terminology, geodetic basis, concepts, and accuracy theory. It also includes satellite-based systems, public and private differential satellite navigation support systems, heading sensor and motion sensor, basic hydroacoustics, and review of acoustic systems.
Learning Outcome

- Have a thorough insight into different forms of coordinate systems used during positioning of ships and rigs
- Have a thorough insight into the systems' operating principle and weaknesses
- Have a thorough knowledge of conditions that can affect the systems' performance
- Skills:
- Assess performance position reference systems used in dynamic positioning
- Predict expected conditions that may affect the system's performance
- Diagnose the most common errors that may occur on the systems
- Account for interface and data flow between different systems
- Competence:
- Have a conscious relationship to own knowledge and skills related to the subject area
Learning Methods and Activities
The course uses pedagogical methods such as lectures, simulator, and lab exercises. Attendance is mandatory at all lectures and exercises.

The course is evaluated through a 2-hour written exam. New and postponed exams are held the following semester.
Specific Conditions
Admission to a programme of study is required, including Nautical Studies (353MN) and Nautical Studies (353YV).
