Course Overview

The course is a general introduction to the Naval architecture profession, with a focus on hydrostatics, stability, and general arrangement plan.


Course Content

  • Lines drawings and hydrostatics
  • General Arrangement and subdivision
  • Transversal upright stability
  • Dynamic stability
  • Longitudinal stability
  • Damage stability
  • Inclining tests
  • Use of software for drafting and technical calculations within naval architecture
  • Sustainable ship design

Learning Outcome

After completion of this module, the candidate shall have obtained:


  • Knowledge about:
    • The ship engineer's role in ship design
    • Hydrostatic properties
    • Upright stability of ship and offshore structures
    • Subdivision
    • Ship's historical significance and future potential
  • Skills in:
    • Application of relevant computer programs for ship design
    • Communicating a ship's properties through Lines drawings and General Arrangement
    • Calculation of hydrostatics and stability
  • Competence on:
    • Terminology
    • Ship types
    • Statutory and regulatory requirements

Learning Methods and Activities

Lectures in classroom and laboratories, weekly compulsory exercises or laboratory tasks, and a project portfolio to be submitted at the end of the module.

Further on Evaluation

Mandatory individual and group assignments must be approved during the semester. The project work is conducted in groups. Re-sit exam: in case of failure or legitimate absence, an improved project can be resubmitted at the next available re-sit examination period. If the student waits until the next regular examination period, an entirely new project must be submitted.
