Course Overview
The course is a general introduction to the Naval architecture profession, with a focus on hydrostatics, stability, and general arrangement plan.
Course Content
Main topics include:
- Lines drawings and hydrostatics
- General Arrangement and subdivision
- Transversal upright stability
- Dynamic stability
- Longitudinal stability
- Damage stability
- Inclining tests
- Use of software for drafting and technical calculations within naval architecture
- Sustainable ship design
Learning Outcome
After completion of this module, the candidate shall have obtained:
- Knowledge about:
- The ship engineer's role in ship design
- Hydrostatic properties
- Upright stability of ship and offshore structures
- Subdivision
- Ship's historical significance and future potential
- Skills in:
- Application of relevant computer programs for ship design
- Communicating a ship's properties through Lines drawings and General Arrangement
- Calculation of hydrostatics and stability
- Competence on:
- Terminology
- Ship types
- Statutory and regulatory requirements
Learning Methods and Activities
Lectures in classroom and laboratories, weekly compulsory exercises or laboratory tasks, and a project portfolio to be submitted at the end of the module.

Mandatory individual and group assignments must be approved during the semester. The project work is conducted in groups. Re-sit exam: in case of failure or legitimate absence, an improved project can be resubmitted at the next available re-sit examination period. If the student waits until the next regular examination period, an entirely new project must be submitted.
