Course Overview

The course ISTG1001, Statistics, is a foundation course that provides students with a comprehensive understanding of statistical concepts and methods. The course is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to apply statistical principles in their professional field.

Course Content

The course covers two main parts:


  • Basic part (5 credits): Descriptive statistics, probability of events, combinatorics, conditional probability, stochastic variables, expectation, variance, covariance, correlation, independence, common probability distributions, the central limit theorem, parameter estimation, confidence intervals, one-sample hypothesis tests, and simple linear regression.
  • Special part (2.5 credits): Experimental design, including two-factor experimental design, block pairing, analysis of methods for repeated and non-repeated experiments, statistical quality control, sources of variation, random sampling, control charts, and capability indexes.

Learning Outcome

Knowledge

The candidate will be familiar with the basic ideas in probability and statistics, have knowledge about simple statistical models and processes, understand the use of statistics as a tool for measuring, describing, and evaluating results, and know how to use basic statistical inference methods.


Skills

The candidate will be able to:


  • Present and describe data material using descriptive statistics
  • Calculate probabilities and conditional probabilities
  • Perform simple statistical inference methods
  • Apply statistical principles in their professional field
  • Use statistical software for basic analysis
  • Perform and analyze two-factor experiments

General Competence

The candidate will understand the importance of statistical knowledge in their engineering role and be able to communicate with professionals about engineering problems using statistical concepts.


Learning Methods and Activities

The course includes lectures, collaborative project work, and exercises. For internet students, lectures may be streamed, and supervision will be provided through real-time technology and a digital forum. Compulsory attendance in person at Gj黲ik is required for the final exam.

Evaluation

The course has two evaluations with character grades: a collaborative project and an individual exam. Both evaluations must be passed to pass the course. A continuation exam is held in August for the written school exam, which may be changed to an oral exam if there are few students.

Admission to a programme of study is required, specifically:

  • Civil Engineering - Engineering (BIBYGG)

Required Previous Knowledge

  • Knowledge in mathematics on the level of R1 and R2 in high school, specifically understanding and competence required to calculate simple integrals.
