Program Overview

Engineering Cybernetics (PhD, 3 years)

Programme Overview

The PhD programme in Engineering Cybernetics is intended for students who want to do research on the science of automatic control and supervision of dynamic systems, such as robots, aircraft, marine craft, cars, electrical circuits, biological systems, and process plants. Students will be able to specialize in control and systems theory for data-controlled prostheses, automatic intelligent robots, unmanned aircraft, live pictures in a mother's womb, and much more.

About the Programme

The study program is academically linked to the main area of technical cybernetics and may also include interdisciplinary fields of research in cooperation with other departments where the main profile is in engineering cybernetics. Engineering cybernetics is the science of automatic control and monitoring of dynamic systems, such as robots, aircraft, marine craft, cars, electrical circuits, biological systems, and process plants. Cybernetics is closely linked to automatic regulation technology and systems theory, including the principles for feedback control and associated stability analysis, as well as estimation theory and learning from data.

Programme Structure

The PhD programme is a three-year programme that is normally based on a five-year master's degree or some other equal education. The programme consists of:

  • A coursework section of 30 ECTS credits
  • A doctoral thesis

Career Opportunities

The PhD education is the highest level of education in Norway. A doctoral degree in Engineering Cybernetics gives numerous exciting career path opportunities in:

  • Academia
  • Business and industry
  • The public sector

Admission Requirements

The conditions for admission to a PhD programme are that:

  • Funding is in place
  • A five-year higher education programme, or some other equal education, has been successfully completed
