Program Overview
Exploratory Studies Program
The Exploratory Studies program is designed for students who are undecided on a major or were not admitted into their program of choice. The program provides advising services to support students' success through a holistic approach.
Program Overview
The program is led by the Student Success Center, which assigns a Student Success Navigator to each Exploratory Studies student. The Navigator helps the student create an action plan and declare a major within four semesters.
Student Support
Student Success Navigators can:
- Share knowledge about Miami's 200+ majors and minors
- Support major and career exploration through partnerships across Miami's academic divisions, Enrollment Management and Student Success, and Student Life
- Assist students in understanding and navigating Miami Plan requirements, academic policies and procedures, and degree audits
- Offer holistic and proactive advising that helps students perform academically and progress toward graduation
Referring Students
Campus partners are encouraged to refer declared students to Exploratory Studies if:
- The student indicates uncertainty about their major and wants to explore major/minor options outside of their current division.
- The student is at risk of not meeting the specific major requirements and needs an alternative plan.
Program Values
The Student Success Center's Exploratory Studies program aspires to create strategic partnerships across the Miami community that foster holistic student support, increase belonging, and empower students during the exploration process. The program values:
- Collaboration: Develop and sustain partnerships across departments that holistically support student success.
- Assessment: Establish learning outcomes and ongoing assessments to promote student success and continuous improvement.
- Advising Excellence: Employ innovative best practices in student exploration.
Pathways Program
The Pathways Program is for students who were provisionally admitted to Miami within Exploratory Studies. The program provides additional support and guidance to help students succeed and declare a major.
