Introduction to the Master of Architecture Program

The Master of Architecture (M.Arch.) graduate degree at Miami University is designed to prepare students for the urgent needs of the 21st century. The program provides a balanced structure of professional preparation and individual exploration, allowing students to develop their unique perspective on architectural practice.

National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) Accreditation

The Master of Architecture (M.Arch.) is a graduate degree accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). In addition to a period of professional internship, the M.Arch degree qualifies individuals for the Architectural Registration Examination (ARE) and licensure in architecture.

Architecture Curriculum and Courses

The curriculum is designed to foster students' diverse interests, such as sustainable urban design, community engagement, building performance, digital fabrication, and cultural heritage. After a core set of courses focused on professional preparation and academic rigor, students explore diverse topics, conditions, and regions to complete their thesis.

M.Arch. II and M.Arch. III Programs

• The M.Arch. II program is a 2-year professional program (60 credit-hour track) designed for students with a pre-professional degree equivalent to a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture.
• The M.Arch. III program is a 3-year professional program (88 credit-hour track) designed for students with an undergraduate degree other than architecture.

Learning Outcomes

The program offers two tracks:

• M.Arch. II: 2-Year Professional Program
• M.Arch. III: 3-Year Professional Program Both programs require students to complete a written and design thesis.

Maxfield Scholar

Students design their own symposium each fall, highlighting their thesis research topics and including the department's Maxfield Scholar.

Architecture graduate students can work alongside community partners through the Center for Community Engagement.

Facts and Stats

• 70% of eligible degree-seeking graduate students receive funding in the form of a graduate assistantship and/or tuition waiver.
• 99.1% of Master's Degree graduates are successfully employed, enrolled in higher education, or in a volunteer/service program.
• 13% of graduate students are international students, and 16.9% of graduate students are diverse domestic graduate students.

Architecture, M.Arch. Admission and Funding

Applicants must satisfy the entrance requirements of the Graduate School of Miami University to be accepted into the Master of Architecture Program. The application deadline for fall admittance is January 15.
